Flying vs. road transfer to San Blas Islands: Which transfer suits you best

Dreaming of turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and swaying palm trees? Look no further than the stunning San Blas Islands! But before you pack your bags and set sail, let's navigate the two main transfer options to paradise: flying in or taking the road.

1. Flying In:
Flying into San Blas offers a swift and hassle-free entry to this tropical haven. Picture this: after a 45-minute private flight, you'll touch down next to your awaiting sailboat – no tedious water taxi transfers required! Say goodbye to land border chaos and bureaucratic delays, and hello to pristine island bliss.

Advantages of Flying In:
- Convenience: Fly in at any time of your choosing, and enjoy instant access to your sailboat upon arrival. The captain will be waiting for you at the runway with the sailboat dinghy.

- Avoid land border hassles: Skip the frequent land border chaos and slow-moving bureaucratic procedures.
- Scenic arrival: Soar over the jungle and cays of San Blas before landing right next to your sailboat – talk about a grand entrance!
- Maximize charter time: Exit the boat at the same time you landed, gaining three precious hours of charter compared to road transfers.

Departure Timings:

  • From Panama City: Flights depart daily from Marcos Gelabert Airport (PAC) in Panama City from 7 AM to 4pm on whichever time we agree on, we will adapt your sailboat charter itinerary.
  • From the Sailboat: Departure time from the sailboat would be the same as what your landing time in San Blas was

2. Taking the road:
For those seeking a more budget-friendly option or a taste of the traditional journey, road transfers provide an adventurous route to San Blas. Embark on a 4x4 SUV taxi ride from Panama City, followed by a scenic taxi boat journey to the islands. While road transfers offer a chance to see the more touristic parts of San Blas, they come with longer travel times and occasional encounters with mosquitos.

Advantages of taking the road:
- Budget-Friendly: Road transfers offer a more economical option for adventurers on a budget.
- Scenic Journey: Experience the beauty of San Blas from both land and sea as you journey to your sailboat.
- Explore Touristic Areas: Pass through the most touristic parts of San Blas, soaking in the sights along the way.

Departure Timings:

  • From Panama City: Departures from hotels in Panama City usually begin around 5:15 AM. The total journey to your sailboat takes approximately 5 hours, including a 2.5-hour 4×4 SUV ride to the Caribbean coast, followed by a 1-hour boat transfer to the island where your sailboat is anchored. Keep in mind that travel times can vary depending on road and sea conditions.
  • Returning from the sailboat: Pick-up is generally between 6:00 and 7:00 AM, depending on the location of the sailboat and the water taxi’s schedule. You’ll typically arrive back in Panama City before noon.

Which way will You choose?

Ultimately, the choice between flying in and taking the road depends on your preferences and priorities. If you crave convenience and comfort, flying is the way to go. But if you're a budget-conscious adventurer who enjoys the scenic route, road transfers offer a unique journey to paradise.
